The world's first successful trial production of semi-solid injection molded magnesium alloy automotive wheels
February 13, 2025
According to the official account of "Magnesium Window", the National Magnesium Alloy Engineering Technology Research Center of Chongqing University has successfully trial produced the world's first magnesium alloy semi-solid forming automobile wheel in batch through joint development with several units.
Currently, magnesium alloy car wheels are mainly formed by solid-state forging. In this trial production, the project team used semi-solid injection molding technology, combined with four types of magnesium alloys, to successfully prepare 16 inch ordinary passenger car wheels for the first time. The single injection volume reaches 10kg, and the net weight of the wheel is 7kg. Compared with traditional aluminum alloy wheels, it reduces weight by about 30%, demonstrating significant lightweighting effects, and the material and manufacturing costs are also significantly reduced.
China has abundant magnesium resources, accounting for over 70% of the global magnesium resources. The production of magnesium and magnesium alloys has accounted for over 80% of the global total for more than ten years, and has an important voice in the field of magnesium materials worldwide. The rapid development and large-scale application of magnesium and magnesium alloys have important strategic significance for promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, ensuring energy security, and alleviating the shortage of metal mineral resources.
