Product Description
Solar water heater spare parts magnesium rod/extruded magnesium anode
Whenever metal is in contact with water, an electro-chemical reaction starts to occur. The metal’s atoms are given up to the water in a process that we know as rusting, or corrosion. While this is generally a slow process, every 18°F temperature rise doubles the effects of corrosion. A typical water heater can heat the incoming cold water by as much as 90°F per cycle. This corresponds to a 10x increase in corrosion.
Tank type water heater manufacturers protect their tanks by applying a ceramic-like enamel lining to the inside of the tank. This coating helps insulate the steel walls of the tank from the water and any corrosive action. However, after time, cracks and voids can develop in the lining. These cracks and voids can offer points for corrosion. In addition, anywhere there are dissimilar metals in contact with each other (ie: copper elements, steel fittings), a potential for corrosion exists.
In order to combat this, the manufacturers equip the water heaters with a sacrificial anode rod. The anode rods are made of a magnesium alloy or aluminum alloy. The magnesium or aluminum anode rod attracts the electrical current and corrodes more easily than the steel tank. Because the anode “sacrifices” itself to protect the water heater tank, it’s known as a sacrificial anode rod.
