Magnesium anode rods, commonly known as magnesium anodes or anode magnesium blocks, are essential components designed to prevent corrosion in metal water heater liners and improve water quality by reducing hardness.
Corrosion Protection Principle
These rods utilize electrochemical corrosion protection principles. The magnesium rod serves as the anode while the metal liner acts as the cathode. When the enamel coating on the metal liner remains intact, insulation resistance between the magnesium rod and liner exceeds 2MΩ, resulting in minimal current output. However, when enamel cracks occur, electrical resistance decreases, allowing the magnesium anode to output current and generate a protective polarizing film that repairs damaged areas and prevents further corrosion. This method is known as the sacrificial anode approach since the magnesium anode gradually consumes itself during operation.
